Bernard Hill, 'Lord of the Rings' and 'Titanic' Actor, Dies at 79

Hill was known for his portrayal of embattled King Théoden in the

'Lord of the Rings' film trilogy

English actor Bernard Hill, who delivered a rousing cry before leading his people into battle in the "Lord of the Rings" film trilogy, has died at 79.

Hill, who also played Captain Smith in the 1997 film "Titanic," died peacefully at his home in Suffolk, England, his agent said in a statement on Thursday.

Born in Blackley, a small town outside Manchester, England, in 1944, Hill began his career in the theater before moving on to film and television.

In addition to his roles in "Lord of the Rings" and "Titanic," Hill appeared in a number of other notable films, including "Gandhi" (1982), "Full Monty" (1997), and "Gosford Park" (2001).

Hill's portrayal of Yosser Hughes in the 1982 BBC series "Boys from the Blackstuff" launched his career and earned him a BAFTA Award for Best Actor.

Hill's agent said in the statement that he will be remembered as a "great character actor" who "will be greatly missed by all who knew him."

Hill is survived by his wife, Mariette, and their two children.
